Part 6: Complete English Grammar & Sentence Structures (文法解説)
All grammar rules, formulas, and explanations are presented in clear English and Romaji. Japanese text is strictly kept in the body practice rows.
1 Ima [Hour]-ji [Minute]-fun/-pun desu Expressing Current Time & Time in Cities
Sentence Structure Formula
Ima + [Number] -ji + [Number] -fun/-pun + desu.
Meaning: "It is currently [Hour]:[Minute]."
[Location] + wa + ima + nan-ji desu ka?
Question Formula: "What time is it now in [Location]?" (e.g. Nyuuyooku wa ima nan-ji desu ka?)
How to Build the Sentence (Step-by-Step):
  1. Step 1: State time marker Ima (now) or set a place as the topic with wa (e.g., Nyuuyooku wa ima).
  2. Step 2: State the hour numeral with counter suffix -ji (時). Note irregulars: 4:00 is yo-ji, 7:00 is shichi-ji, 9:00 is ku-ji.
  3. Step 3: State the minute numeral with counter suffix -fun or -pun (分). For half-past, use han (半).
  4. Step 4: Finish with polite predicate desu. (or desu ka? for questions).

1) Hour and Minute Counter Suffixes:

To tell time, Japanese attaches -ji (時) to indicate hours, and -fun / -pun (分) to indicate minutes. When asking questions, the interrogative word nan combines with the counter to form nan-ji (what time) and nan-pun (what minute).

2) Geographical Location as Topic:

As learned in Lesson 1, the particle wa indicates the topic of the sentence. You can set a foreign city as the topic to inquire about international time zones: Nyuuyooku wa ima nan-ji desu ka? (What time is it in New York now?).

Japanese (Body Practice) Romaji English Meaning Audio
① 今 何時ですか。
…7時10分です。
Ima nan-ji desu ka?
...Shichi-ji jip-pun desu.
What time is it now?
...It is seven ten (7:10).
② ニューヨークは 今 何時ですか。
…午前4時です。
Nyuuyooku wa ima nan-ji desu ka?
...Gozen yo-ji desu.
In New York what time is it now?
...It's 4 a.m.
2 Verb -masu (動詞ます形) Polite Verb Predicate Form
Sentence Structure Formula
[Topic] + wa + [Frequency / Adverb] + [Verb -masu].
Meaning: "[Topic] does [Action]." (Polite statement)

1) Action Verbs as Sentence Predicates:

In Lessons 1 to 3, all sentences ended with noun predicates followed by desu (e.g., Watashi wa gakusei desu, Koko wa shokudou desu). Starting in Lesson 4, we use verbs as predicates.

2) The Role of -masu:

Attaching the suffix -masu to a verb stem turns it into a formal, polite sentence ending suitable for everyday conversation with teachers, colleagues, and acquaintances.

Japanese (Body Practice) Romaji English Meaning Audio
③ わたしは 毎日 勉強します。 Watashi wa mainichi benkyoushimasu. I study every day.
3 V-masu / V-masen / V-mashita / V-masen deshita Non-Past & Past Verb Conjugation Matrix
Verb Conjugation Matrix (4 Quadrants)
Polarity Non-Past (Present / Future / Habitual) Past (Completed Action)
Affirmative (+) 〜ます (-masu)
Example: おきます (get up)
〜ました (-mashita)
Example: おきました (got up)
Negative (−) 〜ません (-masen)
Example: おきません (do not get up)
〜ませんでした (-masen deshita)
Example: おきませんでした (did not get up)
Critical Answering Rule: When answering a verb question, you MUST repeat the verb! You cannot say *Hai, sou desu or *Iie, sou ja arimasen for action verbs. Always answer: Hai, benkyoushimashita or Iie, benkyoushimasen deshita.

Non-Past vs. Past Tense:

Japanese verbs do not have a distinct future tense. The non-past form (-masu) expresses both regular habitual actions (Maiasa 6-ji ni okimasu) and future actions (Ashita 6-ji ni okimasu). To describe past completed events, change the ending to -mashita or -masen deshita.

Japanese (Body Practice) Romaji English Meaning Audio

…6時に 起きます。
Maiasa nan-ji ni okimasu ka?
...Roku-ji ni okimasu.
What time do you get up every morning?
...I get up at six.
4 Noun (Time) + ni + Verb Action Particle に for Specific Time of Occurrence
Sentence Structure Formula
[Specific Numerical Time] + ni + [Verb]
Used when an action occurs at a momentary, numerical point in time: e.g. 6-ji han ni okimasu.
When to Use 'ni' vs. When NEVER to Use 'ni':
• MUST USE に: With specific numbers / clock times / dates (e.g., 6-ji ni, 7-gatsu 2-nichi ni).
• OPTIONAL に: With days of the week (e.g., Nichi-youbi [ni]).
• NEVER USE に: With relative time words without numbers: kyou, kinou, ashita, ototoi, asatte, kesa, konban, maiasa, mainichi!

Precise Temporal Anchor:

Particle に (ni) pinpoints the specific time an action happens. Relative time expressions change their meaning depending on the day spoken, so they stand independently as adverbs without ni.

Japanese (Body Practice) Romaji English Meaning Audio
⑨ 6時半に 起きます。 Roku-ji han ni okimasu. I get up at six thirty.
⑩ 7月2日に 日本へ 来ました。 Shichi-gatsu futsuka ni Nihon e kimashita. I came to Japan on July 2nd.

⑫ きのう 勉強しました。 Kinou benkyoushimashita. I studied yesterday. (NO 'ni' after relative time!)
5 [N1] kara [N2] made [Verb] Starting Point (From) and Ending Point (Until / To)
Sentence Structure Formula
[Start Time / Place] + kara + [End Time / Place] + made + [Verb]
Time range: "From [Start] until [End] does [Verb]." (e.g. 9-ji kara 5-ji made hatarakimasu).
[Facility] + wa + [Start] kara + [End] made + desu.
Business Hours: "[Facility] is open from [Start] until [End]." (e.g. Ginkou wa 9-ji kara 3-ji made desu).
Key Flexibility Notes:
  1. Independent Usage: kara and made do not always have to be used together. You can say 9-ji kara hatarakimasu (I work from 9) or Hiruyasumi wa 12-ji kara desu (Lunch is from 12).
  2. Spatial Ranges: They can also indicate physical distance between places (e.g. Oosaka kara Toukyou made - From Osaka to Tokyo).

Temporal and Spatial Spans:

から (kara) marks the departure point in time or space, while まで (made) marks the arrival point or limit. When combined directly with desu, they describe open hours, schedules, or durations.

[Fact / Number] + desu ne.
Echo Confirmation: "It is [Fact], correct?" (e.g. confirming phone numbers).

Emotional Nuance & Social Rapport:
